When the Bathroom Sits at the Center of Your Home

Not long ago, I visited a client’s apartment. It was lovely, with a beautiful view and a layout that had a lot going for it. But as I studied the floor plan, one thing stood out: the bathroom sat in the middle of the apartment, sharing a wall with the kitchen. She was also going through a difficult period at work.

If your home has a similar layout, take a breath. It is very common, and there is a lot you can do to keep the space balanced. Here is what we did for my client.

Step 1: Keep the Bathroom Clean, Closed, and Well Lit

A bathroom in this position needs a little extra care. Like every room, it needs fresh air, so ventilate it regularly. Then keep the door closed and the space very clean at all times, and keep the toilet lid down.

We also added light. We placed a small salt lamp as a night light, which stays on in the bathroom. Any light you like will do.

Step 2: Keep the Water Flowing

This bathroom had a drainage problem, so we had the drain cleared and made sure the water ran freely. In Feng Shui, stagnant water is associated with stagnant prosperity, money, and health, so keeping the water moving and everything working well matters. It is also simply good home maintenance.

Step 3: Add Metal Where the Analysis Supports It

The kitchen and the bathroom shared a wall, and in Feng Shui, Fire and Water prefer to have their own space. Based on a full analysis of the apartment, we placed metal along that shared wall, because the analysis supported it.

Every home has its own “DNA,” based on the period in which it was built or renovated. When we combine that with the flying stars, we can see which element each area needs. That is why this step is never generic: it is designed for that specific home.

On the kitchen side, we installed a heavy metal bar with a set of cast iron skillets hanging from it, along with metal utensils such as ladles and spatulas. Together, they create a gentle boundary between the kitchen and the bathroom.

What Changed for Her

At the time, my client was going through a very difficult moment at work, and she feared she might lose her job. After these changes, things turned around. She kept her job, she is still there, and she is happy. She feels safe and comfortable at home, and she believes these changes helped her through a hard season.

Every home is different, and I never promise results, but her story is a reminder that small, thoughtful steps can make a real difference.

What Is Ideal, and What Is Possible

In Feng Shui, the ideal location for a bathroom is along a side wall of the home, not in the middle, and not against the kitchen. If you are looking to buy a home, keep this in mind when you review the floor plan.

But an ideal is not a requirement. If you already live in a home like this, perhaps for many years to come, you do not need to worry. With a clean, ventilated, well-lit bathroom, water that runs freely, and a few thoughtful adjustments, your home can feel balanced and comfortable. These steps are not a permanent cure, so it helps to revisit them from time to time.
