There are moments that split your life in two. For me, that moment came ten years ago with a devastating loss. That void didn't just live in my chest; it took over my home. From the outside, my tiny apartment looked "cute." But if you looked closer—behind the closet doors, under the furniture, inside the kitchen cabinets—you’d find my true self.
It was hidden clutter. A suffocating mess that reflected exactly how I felt inside.
The Turning Point: From Ridicule to Revelation
I’ve always been a philosophical soul, believing that not all answers are found on this physical plane. That’s how I stumbled upon a woman’s voice narrating the KonMari Method.
To be honest? I laughed. She said two things that sounded absolutely ridiculous to me at the time:
That after decluttering your home, you would actually lose physical weight.
That you should only keep things that you love.
I thought it was a joke. "Keep only what I love? What am I supposed to do, live in an empty box?" I mocked the idea, but those words stuck in my mind like a thorn. Desperate to fill my emotional gaps, I decided to stop laughing and start opening boxes.
Facing the Ghosts of My Past
The process was a battle. I realized I was filling my emotional emptiness with stuff—buying things to feel something, or rather, to avoid feeling anything at all.
I made a radical decision: to purge my home of any energy from the past. This included everything bought by my ex-husband. People judged me. Someone even asked, "Are you sure you want to throw away this expensive furniture?" Yes, I was sure. When those things left, I was left with almost nothing... but I was finally left with myself.
The Mountain of Papers and the Healing Cry
The climax happened in a dark closet filled with memories of my youth—letters and poems from my daughter’s father, my best friend, whose loss had left an indelible mark on my soul.
As I tore up old papers and let go of memories that no longer served my present, a mountain of shredded paper grew in my living room. I cried until I thought I’d run out of tears. I didn't destroy his legacy—I gave the poems he wrote for me to my daughter, because they belong to her. But letting go of the rest was like lifting a physical weight off my shoulders.
10 Pounds Lighter and Finally Free
When the last trash bag left my house, I stepped on the scale. I had lost 10 pounds. It wasn't just the physical labor; it was the emotional baggage I finally stopped carrying.
It wasn’t an overnight miracle, but a journey of years. Today, the irony is gone. Now, in my home, everything that exists is something I love, something I want, and something I respect. What I once mocked is now my sanctuary.
Tidying my bed every morning isn't a chore; it’s a ritual of self-love. An anchor. A promise to myself.
